Sarah Graves Smila

Sarah Graves Smila, age 85, died November 20, 2022 at her home in Glasgow, KY.

Born in Scottsville, KY on December 13, 1936 to the late Eutra Hix Graves and Margaret Euleta Strait Graves, she was one of four children.  She grew up in the house that is now the Allen County Historical Museum, formerly the Dr. Pellie G. Graves home.  She attended Scottsville High School and graduated Class of 1954.

She is a member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church, A long-time member of the Edmund Rogers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as the Chapter Regent for six years and Chaplain for two terms.  Sarah also served as the Chairman of the Veterans Committee for several years-a project to which she was very dedicated.  She retired from the Eaton Corporation after 26 years of service.  A member of the Glasgow-Barren County Joint City-County Planning Commission, she served as Secretary/Treasurer for twelve years and also served on the Glasgow Board of Adjustment for twelve years.  Other memberships include; the Glasgow Historic Preservation Commission, the Exhibit Committee for the South Central Cultural Center (Museum of the Barrens) and the Allen County Historical Society.  As long as their health permitted, Sarah and her husband were well-known antiques dealers, participating in antiques shows throughout the Southeast United States.

Preceding her in death are her parents, a brother P. G. Graves (Carol), two sisters, Shari Lattimore and Rosemary Harper (Bob) and a son-in-law Don Maynard.

She is survived by her husband, William Smila, who came to Glasgow with Eaton Corperation in 1972, retiring with 35 years of service, four children; Euleta Ann Stone (Gary Frank), Alecia Maynard Waldenmeyer (Bob), Sallie Tabor (Jim) and Douglas Alexander (Shari), a niece, Sebrena Lattimore Matthews who became another daughter after the death of her mother, Shari, seven grandchildren; Jacob Tabor, Seth Tabor, Sarah-Kathryn Keltner (Brandon), Garrett Stone (Elliot), Mack Maynard (Hannah), John Bennett Alexander, and Maeghann Alexander Morrison (John) and eight great grandchildren; Tabor Stone, Ann Chapel Stone, John Griffin Keltner, Thomas Reid Morrison, Addilynn Mae Morrison, Shepard Maynard, Abel Maynard, and Cohan Maynard.  Also surviving are two stepdaughters Linda Smila and Loretta Smila Parnaby (Gary) and nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be November 22, 2022 at 11:00 AM at the Crescent Hill Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Glasgow, KY or the Allen County Historical Society.
