January 20, 1932 – October 21, 2022

Mary Sue Corum Secrest, age 90 and a resident of Allen County, died Friday October 21, 2022 at the Hospice House of Southern Kentucky.

She was born in Lebanon, Kentucky on January 20, 1932 to Harold and Ruth Corum and then moved to Hodgensville.  She could remember going to the Baptist Church with her mother to assist refugees from Louisville 1937 flood who were housed there.  The family moved to Stanford, Kentucky where she entered first grade and lived there until mid-term of her freshman year in high school when they moved to Campbellsville, Kentucky where she meet and began dating James S. Secrest.  After finishing high school she and Jim married on September 2, 1950.  Two weeks later Jim started four years of night law school at the University of Louisville.  While in law school James S. Secrest, Jr. was born on January 14, 1952.  Upon graduation from law school the family moved to Scottsville, Kentucky.  Sue and Jim joined the First United Methodist Church in December 1954where they were both active members until age took its toll.  They added a daughter, Lynn Suzanne Secrest, on February 13, 1958.  Suzanne preceded Sue and Jim in death August 2011.

Sue was an active member of the community all her life.  She taught Sunday school and served as president of the Scottsville Garden Club on 2 separate occasions.  She served as president of the Republican Womaen’s group a couple of times and also served 8 years on the board of directors of Lifeskills, Inc.  Sue’s greatest interest was in promoting the cultural arts in the community.  She spearheaded and hosted 3 artist residencies that ultimately spawned the Allen County Scottsville Arts Council where she served as the first president.  Sue was also active in the area Lawyer’s Auxillary and served as president of the group in 1982-1983.

Sue’s love of God’s world and all of nature’s beauty was evident in her lifetime as she was fortunate to have lived in a lovely lakeside setting on Barren River Lake.

Preceding her in death are her parent, husband James S. Secrest and daughter Lynne Suzanne Secrest.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law James S. Secrest Jr. and Vivian Ann Foster Secrest, two granddaughters, Melissa Sheryl Secrest Schwartz and Traci Leigh Secrest Berry; one grandson, Damian Tyler Secrest; and four great grandchildren, Andrew Foster Berry, Silas Olivia Schwartz, James Tyler Berry and Nathanial Seaton Berry.
